Tracking Blastomycosis to Save Pet Lives.

Awareness today. Better outcomes tomorrow.

Welcome pet friends. Blastobase® is a national research and awareness organization dedicated to collecting data about blastomycosis cases and improving prevention by ongoing tracking of positive cases, educating the public for early diagnosis, and treatment. We exist because too many pets are diagnosed with blastomycosis too late.

What is Blastomycosis?

Blastomycosis is a serious – sometimes deadly – fungal infection in animals and humans caused by breathing in Blastomyces fungal spores typically found in moist soil, decomposing wood, and leaves, that has been disturbed (e.g., in the forest or by a construction site). Many cases are reported near waterways in the Great Lakes, Mississippi/Ohio River valleys, and Canada. However, as additional cases are reported, we are learning that exposure is not always associated with moist soil or construction sites.

In pets, it often causes kennel-cough like symptoms (coughing, lethargy, eye mucous) and other symptoms such as skin lesions may be present. It causes flu-like symptoms and can spread from the lungs to the skin, bones, or other organs. In pulmonary x-rays, it often appears as lung cancer.

Why This Research Matters

Blastomycosis remains a serious and often underdiagnosed disease in dogs, with many cases—like that of our CEO’s own pet Sabo—initially misidentified, leading to delayed treatment, long-term complications, or even loss of life.

While advances in antifungal therapies in the 1980s and 1990s improved treatment outcomes, research and large-scale tracking efforts have since declined. As a result, many cases today go undetected or unreported, limiting our collective understanding.

Compounding this, Blastomyces spores are extremely difficult to detect in the natural environment. This makes identifying high-risk areas nearly impossible without shared data.

Much like public health efforts used to monitor outbreaks such as measles or COVID-19, the most effective way to identify patterns and protect pets is through collective reporting and sharing of information by everyone in the pet community.
